Mac mini M4 Pro 48GB vs 64GB: Which memory option for local LLMs?
When the same model fits both, more memory chiefly provides headroom. Check whether larger models, long documents or other apps require the 64GB configuration's extra space.

Image and video generation
Check the media model
LLM speed does not tell you media-generation performance. Choose the image or video model and resolution separately.

MLX 4-bit / MLX 4-bit. When runtime paths differ, the speed gap also includes software and model-format differences.
Estimated power draw
Mac mini M4 Pro 48GB
Estimated LLM power draw is lower at about 92 W. Noise and physical size need a separate check.
Local pricing
Mac mini M4 Pro 48GB is about 213 × KRW 10,000 cheaper based on the median price. If the speeds are similar, the cheaper one is the balancing choice.
Before choosing hardware
| Measure | Mac mini M4 Pro 48GB | Mac mini M4 Pro 64GB |
|---|---|---|
| Available fast memory | 41GB | 56GB |
| Memory bandwidth | 273GB/s | 273GB/s |
| Estimated total time | 8.7 s | 8.7 s |
| Estimated sustained LLM load | about 92W | about 95W |
| Korean price range (KRW) | 263–344 × KRW 10,000 | 412–620 × KRW 10,000 |
Estimated ranges for one user. Multi-GPU and multi-device results depend on the runtime and interconnect.
Reserve memory for your other apps
Unified memory serves macOS, the browser and editor as well as the model. Check headroom after opening documents and coding tools with the model loaded. If you keep many apps open, the difference between 48GB and 64GB can matter more in daily work than in an isolated benchmark.
Compare the same model before increasing file size
Compare generation with the same model and input first. Then try a larger quantization or model to examine capacity. Rather than expecting twice the speed for the same small model, check how comfortably the larger-memory configuration accommodates your intended file and context.
Account for memory that cannot be added later
Mac unified memory is chosen as part of the purchased configuration. Even if you use a small model now, compare against the larger file you plan to use soon. Instead of choosing maximum capacity without a plan, name your current and next models to evaluate the price difference.
