Mac mini 24GB or 32GB: is more memory worth it for local AI?
Memory is often the last decision before checkout. 24GB looks sufficient today, but what if it is not enough later? That uncertainty can make every upgrade feel necessary. Here is a way to separate useful headroom from money spent on a vague possibility.
The model is not your only application
It is tempting to close everything when testing a model. In daily use, a browser and document editor usually stay open. Reproduce that routine: unified memory is not reserved for the model. Comparing its file size with the memory label can therefore be misleading. Keep your usual applications open and repeat a real task. A successful first answer tells you less about the purchase than whether switching between those applications remains comfortable.
When 24GB can be enough
If you mostly revise short text or chat with a small model and run AI only when needed, accommodating a larger model may not be your priority. Judge the answers to your own questions. If they are useful and other apps remain responsive, you need not buy capacity for every possible future model. Do not reduce this decision to a parameter count: the quantized file, context setting and runtime all affect the fit. Before buying, narrow the test to one configuration you actually intend to use.
When the extra capacity earns its keep
Extra memory has a concrete purpose if short questions work but documents make the system struggle, or if every AI session begins with closing other apps. Daily housekeeping is a real cost. But if the model already fits comfortably and text simply arrives slowly, another 8GB is not a guaranteed cure. Separate work displaced by limited capacity from generation that is inherently slow on that chip. The former points toward memory; the latter calls for comparing chips and runtime settings.
Look beyond the amount marked used
A large used-memory figure in Activity Monitor does not by itself mean the setup has failed; macOS also uses available memory for caching. Consider memory pressure, swap and actual responsiveness together. Brief swap usage alone is not a reason to replace a computer, but persistent pressure and longer waits deserve investigation. Use the same document and a similar browser workload for comparisons. A task you repeat every week is a better purchasing reference than an exceptional workload you rarely perform.
Write down two costs before checkout
Write down the price of the memory upgrade and the cost of replacing the machine if it proves insufficient. Fear of replacement is still not a reason to buy the largest option automatically. If you have not chosen a task or model, try a small model on your current computer first. In the comparison tool, hold the model and input length constant while changing memory configurations. Treat estimates as a shortlist, then check that the seller's chip, unified memory and SSD match the configuration you evaluated.
